A St. Louis, MO native, I have lived in Bridgeton a suburb of St. Louis for all but six years of my life. I grew up being involved in all sports, picked up a golf club around the age of 7. I played and won a variety of junior golf tournaments within the Gateway PGA Junior Golf Program. I was a 4-year Varsity Golfer for Hazelwood West High School qualifying for the Missouri State Golf Tournament Junior and Senior years of school. I attended and played for the University of Missouri at St. Louis in college. In March of 1996 at the age of 22 I left college to become a golf professional in order to pursue the one interest of my life being around the game of golf and helping those who wanted to play.
I have been in the golf business as a golf professional now for 28 years, five of those as an apprentice and 23 as a class "A" member of the PGA. One thing I have learned is that anyone can play the game of golf. You see, I have had to overcome two disabilities in order to play the game: one, an essential tremor (movement tremor) that has affected my hands all of my life, two, a fused ankle joint in my right ankle that limits the movement I have. During the final stage of becoming a golf professional an individual must do a presentation to a group of his/her peers on what a golf professional might come upon in their career, and I chose "How to teach an individual that has tremors." Since the tremors I had affected my hands, I developed ways to play competitively throughout my life. With the limited movement in my ankle, I do not always finish my swing, so I had to adjust my stance and follow through in order to become effective. By growing up with these two disabilities I believe that anyone if they attempt it can play the game of golf.
When I meet students for the first time, I do an interview with them to learn more about them and their game. I first check to see if a student has anything that might be distraction or hindrance in their swing. Any type of disability, recent surgery or injury that they might be a little cautious with when swinging the club. Next, I lik
When I meet students for the first time, I do an interview with them to learn more about them and their game. I first check to see if a student has anything that might be distraction or hindrance in their swing. Any type of disability, recent surgery or injury that they might be a little cautious with when swinging the club. Next, I like to see what type of activities or sports they may or may not have played throughout their life in order to be able use something they know how to do. I believe in the simplicity of the game. If you can relate to your students and get on a level playing ground and relate things, you are talking about in the swing to an action they are aware of then it becomes simpler to them. Do not make learning for your student harder than it needs to be.
I like to work on one to two swing thoughts in a lesson. In my experience once a person leaves the lesson life kicks back in so only 20-30% of the lesson is retained and the other 70-80% is forgotten. So, in most instances the individual will sit on the practice tee and say, "What was he wanting me to work on again?" For that purpose, I like to use the swing video capture software, teaching aids, and other household items to help convey the swing changes we are trying to make. With the use of the golf swing video capture software a student will be able to view their swing during the lesson and after when they receive their lesson in a video form via their smart phone and/ or email. The use of video helps the student appeal to their visual learning side which reinforces the ability to remember parts of the lesson, and to help understand what I am discussing during the lesson. At the end of each lesson a student will receive "homework!" Whether it is drills that we do that involve hitting balls, or 2 sets of 20 repetitions that we do while working out at the house. A student will be given this "homework" to help accomplish their goals. Let's face it I understand that we all do not have the time to hit balls four to five hours a day so that's why I give drills to work on at the house for those times. Just like in life there are no quick fixes, if we want something we have to work at it if we want to see a change. If you work at it at all, I do promise you this, "You will improve and you will have fun!"Say something interesting about your business here.
